On the morning of July 27, 1816, the first Americans to stand here encountered a horrific scene after the magazine explosion, with the remains of 270 people killed in the blast scattered about. They also found an arsenal of ten cannons, 2,500 muskets, and more than 150 barrels of black powder. Excavations later uncovered some original timbers from the octagonal magazine here.
