Double Trouble Village began with Atlantic white cedar lumbering and grew into an active, self-contained cranberry production community from the early 1900s through the 1960s. Its village, sawmill, cranberry bogs, and processing facilities survived, preserving the historic lumber and cranberry industries of New Jersey and the character of a small company town where people lived, worked, and went to school. Seasonal pickers lived in cottages or a bunk house and arrived each year on Labor Day weekend, staying until Thanksgiving to handpick cranberries in the bogs. The year-round foreman directed cranberry and sawmill operations, a one-room school served first the lumbering community and later cranberry workers' children, and the cranberry sorting and packing house became the center of the harvest, where berries were sorted by size and quality and packed for market. Other village buildings included a general store supplying staples and later convenience goods, a shared shower room with separate spaces for men and women, and a garage and machine shop that began as the blacksmith and repair shop for the village's main industries.
