Before Saddlehorn became a neighborhood, it was a rural cattle farm where corrals like this served, and in some cases still serve, as holding pens for working with cattle that grazed the surrounding pastures. The farmers who built this corral cut its posts from Eastern Cedar trees on the property because the wood decays slowly. They set the cross members high so an excited animal could not jump over the fence. The main section functioned as the holding pen, while cattle were brought into the narrow shoot to separate them for tagging or veterinary care, and the metal gate at the end of the shoot acted as a head-hold to stabilize the animal.
