Roper Mountain Science Center in Greenville, South Carolina, is a regional science museum and educational campus within the Greenville County School District. Planned in 1982 through public and private cooperation and opened in 1985, it was created to extend science education beyond the traditional classroom. Its campus unites facilities for natural sciences, physical science, space science, historical interpretation, and astronomy, including a living history farm, science halls, a planetarium, and an observatory. A centerpiece is the Charles E. Daniel Observatory’s 58.4-centimeter refracting telescope, first completed for Princeton University in 1882, later rebuilt, transferred, donated, renovated, and installed there as one of the nation’s largest refractors.
