Deer Flat was a small valley with two ranches or farms where emigrants stopped to rest and recruit their stock. On Aug. 12, 1854, John Murray Mickey wrote, "Deer Flat is quite a little valley. Here were two ranches or farms. Emigrants stop here to rest and recruit their stock...We lay over eights day [sic]."
