Black Magic Canyon is a small canyon in southern Idaho north of Shoshone along Idaho State Highway 75, notable for its narrow, sculpted walls cut into dark volcanic rock that resemble Utah slot canyons. Over the last 10,000 years, the Big Wood River carved through basalt lava flows about 800,000 years old, creating polished black rock and intricate stone formations. Its significance lies in this striking geologic process and appearance. Seasonal conditions shape access, as summer irrigation can affect the river and winter brings snow, making spring and fall the best times to explore the canyon.
