Blaze Mountain is a 10,384-foot summit in the Spanish Peaks subrange of Montana’s Madison Range, within the Lee Metcalf Wilderness and Gallatin National Forest. It rises dramatically, gaining about 3,000 feet above South Fork Spanish Creek in only 1 mile, and its runoff reaches the Missouri River through Spanish Creek and the Gallatin River. The name is descriptive, drawn from a white strip of snow that persists through summer in a narrow draw on the mountain’s west face. The U.S. Forest Service proposed the name, and the United States Board on Geographic Names officially adopted it in 1930. The mountain lies in a subarctic climate with severe winters and short summers.
