Box Canyon and Lomaki ruins lie a short 15-minute walk away along the edges of ancient earthcracks. The 1/4-mile trail leads back more than 800 years to the remnants of a once-thriving prehistoric community in a high-desert environment. Native plants still grow here, the eruptions of Sunset Crater Volcano affected the ancient inhabitants, and the plaza was a place for daily activities such as cooking and grinding corn. Pottery sherds and other artifacts left in place remain invaluable to archeologists studying the ruins, and staying on the trail helps preserve and protect the landscape and ancient ruins for future generations' enjoyment and education.
