Baldwin Dudley Pond, part of the Menunkatuck or West River, was once the crossroads and center of commerce for this part of Guilford. On the dammed river stood a tannery, bone mill, and bark mill associated with the tanning of leather, along with a grist mill, horse barn, and hog pound. These mills depended on water power, and likely used two water wheels to drive machinery for producing grain and bone meal. The site thrived throughout the early 19th century, with wagonloads of goods coming and going daily. For perhaps a century, this millpond produced considerable wealth for the Dudley family and served as a center for people who lived and farmed in the region. The seven-acre parcel is owned by the Town of Guilford as open space received through an adjacent subdivision.
