The first Buckwheat Festival was held in Kingwood on October 13, 14 and 15, 1938, sponsored by the Kingwood Volunteer Fire Department, with Harry Brindle as general chairman. On this site, the festival’s first king and queen were crowned: Louise Shaw as Queen Buckwheat, later changed to Queen Ceres, and E. Scott Miller as King Buckwheat. The two were later married.
