Steve Spurrier was named to the College Football Hall of Fame as a player in 1986 and as a coach in 2017, joining Amos Alonzo Stagg, Bobby Dodd, and Bowden Wyatt as one of only four inducted as both player and coach. As Florida’s head coach from 1990 to 2001, he compiled a 122-27-1 record, the most wins for a Gator coach in school history. In 1996, the team won its first national championship with a 52-20 victory over Florida State in the Sugar Bowl. Spurrier led the Gators to six SEC titles in 1991, 1993 through 1996, and 2000, was a three-time SEC Coach of the Year, and became the first person both to win a Heisman Trophy and to coach a Heisman Trophy winner, Danny Wuerffel, in 1996.
