Proposed in 1905 as a 742 mile, straight-line, high speed route without crossings, the Chicago - New York Electric Air Line Railroad was intended to link Chicago and New York in an estimated ten hours at a cost of ten dollars. Just under twenty miles between La Porte and Chesterton were constructed from 1906 to 1911.
