Georgia native George Baber was a well-respected physician and civic leader. His family moved to Winnsboro in 1895, and after graduating from Emory University in 1906, he returned and served his hometown with distinction. He was a member of state and national medical associations and served on the State Board of Medical Examiners from 1911 to 1915. In Winnsboro, at this house, he practiced general medicine and surgery, opened a hospital in 1917, and served as city and county health officer. In 1917 he married Charlie Ashberry (1883-1979), a talented pianist and actress, and the couple was fondly remembered for their philanthropy and leadership.
