From 1914 to 1953, African-American children of the surrounding area attended a two-room schoolhouse a short distance east along the Warrenton Turnpike. This was the final location of the Macrae School, which was originally established in 1870 as a one-room school on land provided by the Macrae family near Buckland. In 1888, the Prince William County School Board purchased a building in the village of Gainesville and moved the school there, but when that building proved inadequate, classes were moved again in 1908. The hall of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church served as a temporary classroom until a new schoolhouse near this location was built. In 1953, the Macrae School closed and was consolidated with the Antioch School on Thoroughfare Road about five miles west.
