In West Columbia, South Carolina, this riverfront district preserves three closely linked sites where transportation, industry, and war converged. The old State Road, first known as the Cherokee Path, formed the eastern boundary of both the factory and prison camp. Along the Saluda River stood Saluda Factory, a textile mill that operated from 1834 to 1884 and left granite foundations and sluices from its water-powered works. During the Civil War, the same landscape became Camp Sorghum, a Confederate prison camp that held 1,300 Union soldiers from the autumn of 1864 until their transfer to Charlotte, North Carolina, in February 1865.
