In the 1860’s there were four saw mills in this area. At the Tom Rowe Saw Mill, the foreman stood in the cage and called out the beam size, such as 8x8 or 12x12, then the cutter set the blade on a track and rode it down the track until the beam cut was complete. The beam then went to the mines to build the shafts.
