Army Air Corps Staff Sergeant Frank J. DePolis, 16th Coast Artillery Private First Class Daniel D. Confer, and U.S.S. Perry Seaman First Class Demonte W. Temple were at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, where DePolis was killed. Army Nursing Corps Lieutenant Jeraldine E. Jones received the Air Medal for bravery while evacuating the wounded in the Solomon Islands, becoming the only county woman decorated in World War II for courage under fire. Thirty-Fourth Infantry Private John G. Deeghan received a Silver Star for gallantry at Bataan and a Bronze Star for heroism at Corregidor. Private First Class Michael J. Russo of the One Hundred Thirtieth Infantry was killed during the Battle of Luzon in the Philippines on February 19, 1945, and Private First Class Allen F. Chapman of the Twenty-Third Marines, whose brother Merrill fell at Omaha Beach on D-Day, was killed at Iwo Jima on February 27, 1945. All gave some, some gave all.
