Tuolumne Grove, near Crane Flat in Yosemite National Park, is a small giant sequoia grove of about 20 acres with roughly two dozen mature sequoias. Officially discovered in 1858 by Dr. J. L. Cogswell and companions, it soon became a notable Yosemite destination after Cogswell published an account of it. Its most famous tree, the Dead Giant, was tunneled in 1878 so stages and wagons could pass through, making it the first known tunnel tree in a giant sequoia. The grove later lay along one of Yosemite’s earliest carriage roads and became part of the park’s protected landscape as federal management and fire policy evolved.
