Bishop John Monroe Moore

John Monroe Moore was born January 27, 1867, two miles northeast of here, was educated in local schools, received a B.A. from National Normal Univ. in Ohio, taught school for 6 years, studied in Germany, and earned a Ph.D. from Yale in 1895. He began his ministry in the Methodist Episcopal South, served as managing editor of the Christian Advocate in Nashville, Tennessee, from 1906 to 1909, was elected bishop in 1918, and was pastor of First Methodist Church in Dallas, Texas. He was a founder of Southern Methodist Univ. and Perkins School of Theology, served on the Board of Trustees of SMU from 1922 to 1939, and was chairman of the board from 1932 to 1938. He was one of three presiding bishops at the Uniting Conference of American Methodist Churches representing MECS and delivered the uniting address. He married in March 1901 and died June 30, 1948.
