Centennial Peak is a 13,062-foot summit in southwestern Colorado’s La Plata Mountains, within the San Juan National Forest northwest of Durango. The mountain is the sixth-highest in its range and stands out for steep relief, rising sharply above Bear Creek and Sliderock Basin. Its summit marks a drainage divide, with western runoff reaching the Mancos River and eastern waters flowing by Bear Creek toward the Dolores River. Formerly called Banded Mountain for its colored sedimentary layers, it received its official name on July 8, 1976, to honor the hundredth anniversary of Colorado statehood. With an alpine climate, it remains a backcountry hiking destination and a reminder of the centennial year.
