At the Battle of Averasboro on March 15-16, 1865, North Carolina troops valiantly resisted the advance of a superior Federal army. The units honored here were the Fiftieth North Carolina Regiment, the Seventy Seventh North Carolina Regiment, and the Tenth Battalion North Carolina Heavy Artillery. Local units engaged here included Company H of the 50th North Carolina Regiment from Harnett County, Companies C and D from Johnston County, and Company B of the 10th North Carolina Battalion from Harnett County. These troops were also remembered as first at Bethel, farthest to the front at Gettysburg and Chickamauga, and last at Appomattox.
