California’s State Capitol in Sacramento has housed the state legislature since 1869 and, with Capitol Park, became part of the California State Parks system in 1982. The site combines a working seat of government with museum spaces, restored historic offices, exhibits, and a memorial landscape. Inside are the historic offices of the secretary of state, treasurer, and governor, as well as the rotunda and other museum areas. In 2020, the marble sculpture Columbus’ Last Appeal to Queen Isabella was removed from the rotunda after legislative leaders cited the deadly impact of Columbus’s arrival on Indigenous peoples. Outside, the 40-acre park contains global plantings, numerous memorials, and monuments tied to California history.
