Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1956 and completed in 1961 as one of his last works, finished after his death. Commissioned for the Milwaukee Hellenic Community, it takes the cross and dome as its guiding forms, with a Greek-cross plan, broad arches, and a shallow scalloped dome above an inverted bowl. Inspired by Byzantine architecture, especially Hagia Sophia, Wright reshaped ancient models for a modern American setting rather than copying them. Its use of gold-anodized aluminum and its place on the National Register of Historic Places underscore its significance in Wright’s late religious architecture.
