Havenwoods State Forest is a 237-acre protected area within Milwaukee that preserves a substantial stretch of open land in a heavily developed urban setting. Managed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, it was created as both an urban green space and an environmental education center. The property includes grasslands, woods, wetlands, Lincoln Creek, an urban arboretum, and education gardens. Its Environmental Awareness Center, with classrooms, an auditorium, displays, and a resource center, underscores its teaching mission. Trails through the forest support nature study along with hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing, and neighboring Schoenecker Park adds to the preserved landscape.
