Nathan Benson, Sr. was a successful local entrepreneur who ran a sawmill and was also a skilled stonecutter whose headstones can be found in many Southern Utah cemeteries. He emigrated from England with his wife and family in 1868 after converting to the Mormon faith. He is buried in the Parowan cemetery alongside his wife, whose headstone he carved. His creations are easily identified as sandstone headstones with an arched top and engraved roses. Married to Ann Baybutt on 25 December 1847 in Eccleston, Lancashire, Nathan Benson, Sr. was born on 12 December 1826 in Wrightington, Lancashire, and died on 26 July 1912 in Parowan, Utah. Ann Baybutt was born on 20 February 1823 in Burscough, Lancashire, and died on 7 February 1889 in Parowan, Utah. Their children were John, Margaret, Thomas, Richard, Ellen, Mary, and Nathan, Jr.
