Bayfield's churches reflect the town's religious growth from the late nineteenth century into the twentieth. At Calvary Presbyterian Church of Pine River at 89 E. Mill Street, ground for the foundation was broken on April 16, 1898, and the building was first used for services eleven months later on March 15, 1899. W. A. Bay donated the lots, lumber came from the Graden saw mill on Beaver Creek, much of it hauled by William Bay's Belgian draft horses, and S. B. Edwards directed construction. A church bell was purchased in 1906 for $40. In 1940-41, a one-story annex and kitchen were added on the north side, and by 1953 growing membership and Sunday school enrollment led to a two-story west addition with a basement, five second-floor classrooms, and a first floor containing the pastor's study, another classroom, and expanded seating off the sanctuary. The Union Church at 80 E. Mill Street was incorporated on July 22, 1901, and was built around 1901 or 1902; its original steeple and bell were removed in 1999, and the bell was given to the Town of Bayfield and placed in front of the Town Hall at the west end of Mill St. The Free Methodist congregation was first organized in 1897 a few miles north of present Bayfield, moved into town in February 1901, likely built its church at 97 W. North Street between February and June 1901, and retained ownership until 1992.
