In Ignacio, Colorado, the Southern Ute Cultural Center and Museum preserves and presents the history and living traditions of the Southern Ute people from prehistoric times to the present. Built in 2011 by Southern Ute tribe members, it combines exhibits, archival materials, classrooms, a library, and event space to sustain community memory and cultural life. Its displays include objects, multimedia, and donated artifacts, while also confronting the Utes’ removal from their land and the forced placement of children in boarding schools. The center remains a living cultural place where the Bear Dance is held and elders teach sewing and the Ute language.
