Hardy Pace, who lived from 1785 to 1864, operated the Chattahoochee River ferry at the bridge site where Pace’s Ferry Road crosses. Federal forces occupied Vining’s Station from July 5 to 17, 1864, while preparing to cross at Pace’s and Power’s for the move on Atlanta. Gen. O. O. Howard of the 4th A. C. had headquarters at the Pace residence from July 5 to 10. Vining’s temporary terminal of the railroad served as the subsistence and ammunition dump of the Federal army during the siege and capture of Atlanta. Wounded from the Atlanta front were sent to Vining’s, where the Pace house was used as a hospital before it was later destroyed by fire.
