Wind Mountain, a 1,907-foot summit in southwestern Washington above the Columbia River Gorge, is a prominent local landmark because its south face rises about 1,800 feet above the river in only half a mile. Part of the Cascade Range and accessible by trail from State Route 14, it offers views of several Gorge landmarks and reflects the marine west coast climate of the western Cascades. The mountain also holds deep cultural importance: near its summit is the Wind Mountain Spirit Quest, a sacred archaeological site created by Native American youths between about 1000 and 200 years ago. Lewis and Clark passed through the area in 1805 and recorded a submerged forest at its base.
