The Nebraska Railroad Museum preserves the history of the Fremont and Elkhorn Valley Railroad, whose tracks dated to 1869, and the wider role of railroading in America. Formerly based in Fremont, it combined exhibits with operating heritage equipment, including museum space in the city’s depot, a dinner train, a scenic loop following an 1869 route, and artifacts tied to the Fremont and Elkhorn Valley Railroad. It has been relocating to Nebraska City’s Burlington Railroad Depot with support from a BNSF Railway donation of eight acres and 2,000 feet of track, but disputes over ownership, right of way, and rail lines, along with legal costs, left its future uncertain after a 2023 court ruling.
