Holmdel Arboretum, also known as the David C. Shaw Arboretum, is a 22-acre public garden in Holmdel Park devoted to trees and shrubs that grow well in New Jersey. Established in 1963 with 87 trees, it has expanded to nearly 3,000 trees and shrubs representing hundreds of species, cultivars, and varieties. Administered by the Monmouth County Shade Tree Commission and Monmouth County Park System, it was later named for David C. Shaw, superintendent of the Shade Tree Commission from 1963 to 2002. Its collections, including memorial dwarf conifers and true cedars, were intended both to display ornamental plants and to encourage local homeowners to use woody plants in their landscapes.
