On September 11, 1895, the first meeting of the newly appointed Board of Trustees of South Glens Falls was held, and the need for a water works system was discussed. By August 17, 1897, the water works system and the pumping house were completed. The foundation here is for the reservoir. Water ran downhill from springs dammed in the area of the present reservoir, then flowed to a filter house and to this stone-filled reservoir. It was then pumped to a 120-foot standpipe, and from there went to two water troughs, one at the corner of Saratoga Avenue and Main Street and the other at the corner of River Street and Main Street. In 1925 the system was upgraded with a new reservoir, pump house, and piping modifications. In 1973, the present water works system was built, with the addition of the one million gallons water tower.
