Eight guard towers stood along Minidoka's perimeter as symbols of prejudice, war hysteria, and imprisonment. Though never completed or staffed, they were constant reminders of lost freedom for the 13,000 Japanese Nikkei who lived there from 1942 to 1945, and their psychological impact remained etched in the memories of incarcerees and in later photographs, artwork, and writings. In 2014, students in Boise State University's Department of Construction Management reconstructed a guard tower using historical images to replicate the original design and scale, and former incarcerees took part in its dedication during the June Pilgrimage.
