At Minidoka, the North Side Canal brought solace to internees who were homesick for the Pacific Northwest. In the dry Idaho desert, the canal reminded them of familiar scenes in Oregon, Washington, and Alaska, where flowing waters were commonplace, and it became a tie to home. Internees spent hours sitting by the canal, listening to and watching the water, and anglers in the camp demonstrated their skill catching fish, finding moments of escape from the confinement of camp life. Louis Fiset, a Minidoka internee, recalled walking to the river bank at night, seeing beauty reflected in the water and the sagebrush red with the sun, and crying and praying to God while gazing at the setting sun. Torn from their homes, two women from Bainbridge Island, Washington, watched the lush Pacific Northwest landscape fade from their ferry's view, and when they finally arrived at Minidoka after ten months at Camp Harmony and Manzanar, they found few reminders of home in March 1942.
