Tuolumne County’s first courthouse was erected on this site in 1854 on land donated to the county by John and Israel P. Yaney. The present courthouse replaced that building, and its cornerstone was dedicated on September 26, 1898, during ceremonies held under the auspices of Tuolumne Lodge No. 8, Free and Accepted Masons. County officers occupied this building on November 10, 1899. The Board of Supervisors included Chairman John B. Doyle, Henry M. Pease, John M. Phelan, James P Hardin, and Thomas A. Hender, with William Mooser and Son as architect and Charles F. McCarthy as contractor.
