Indian Ford, just north of here, was long used by Indians, pioneers, and early explorers to cross the Jordan River. Crossing was relatively easy when the water was low, but raging waters during high runoff made crossing difficult. Indian Ford Ferry, located here, made crossing possible year-round. The ferry was most likely a flat-bottom boat with sides and possibly pontoons. Drop-down front and back allowed one wagon at a time with horses and people to enter the ferry. Back and front ramps were then fastened securely. Man-powered poles, pushed into the bottom of the river, were used to push the ferry across. A strong rope was tethered on both sides of the river to keep the ferry on course. The ferry operated day and night. It was used by the Pony Express, the Overland Stage Coach, and other travelers. In periods of high traffic, it is estimated that as many as 500 people crossed this site daily.
