Duluth Harbor North Pier Light stands on the north breakwater of the Duluth Ship Canal, marking the entrance through harbor piers reshaped in 1896. Although the south pier received a light in 1874, the north pier went without one for decades despite the canal’s hazardous approach and wrecks such as the SS Mataafa in 1905. Recommended by the Lighthouse Board in 1908, funded in 1909, and first lit in 1910, the steel-plate tower was modeled on the Peche Island Rear Range Light and fitted with a French fifth-order Fresnel lens and electric lamp. It later gained recognition for its engineering, maritime, and transportation significance and was transferred to Rethos in 2022.
