Duluth South Breakwater Outer Light guides ships from Lake Superior into the Duluth Ship Canal in tandem with the inner light, marking an important Great Lakes harbor entrance. Authorized in 1870 and first lit in 1874 after delays caused by storm damage and canal construction, it began as a wooden tower with a Fresnel lens and soon gained increasingly elaborate fog signals to meet heavy local fog. The present Cream City brick lighthouse was completed in 1901 during reconstruction of the canal and retained earlier lighting equipment. Its fog signal evolved through the 20th century before being removed in 2006, while the light remains active and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.
