Families of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe once lived along the Missouri River at Old Agency, a town established in 1869 on the river’s west shore just north of Highway 212 that later served as the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Headquarters. Beginning in 1948, construction of Oahe Dam and the formation of Lake Oahe inundated the town, and the people, both living and dead, were moved to new locations while the Tribal Headquarters were relocated to Eagle Butte. The site now also provides lake access for campers, fishermen, and swimmers, and the surrounding area has been planted with native species that are culturally significant to the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Lakota people as part of a flora stewardship effort to protect and reestablish plants affected by the flooding of the Missouri River valley.
