Shaler Battery was a hilltop earthwork fortification built in Northern Kentucky during the American Civil War to turn back invading Confederate troops and protect Cincinnati and the Ohio River Valley. One of 28 artillery batteries built on Northern Kentucky hilltops from 1861 to 1863, it was named after Dr. Nathaniel Burger Shaler, a Kentucky physician who donated his family’s hilltop vineyard to support the Union, and that site remains the location of Shaler Battery.
