In Covington's Latonia area, the Railway Museum of Greater Cincinnati preserves railroad equipment tied to the seven railroads that once entered Cincinnati. It grew from a nineteen seventy-five effort by local enthusiasts to run privately owned passenger cars on Amtrak excursions, but when tighter rules and rising costs ended that plan in the late nineteen eighties, the surviving cars became the basis for a preservation museum. On its four-acre site, the museum now maintains about eighty historic pieces, with especially strong Pennsylvania Railroad representation, including E8 locomotive number five eight eight eight and notable cars such as Juliet, Metropolitan View, and railway post office car P.R.R. number six five one eight.
