Soldier Mountain is a small alpine ski area in the Soldier Mountains of south-central Idaho, north of Fairfield in the Sawtooth National Forest. It grew from local postwar enthusiasm for skiing after Bob Frostenson and Harry Durall, inspired by the 1948 Winter Olympic tryouts in nearby Sun Valley, raised $10,000 and built the original hill largely by hand. The area later expanded with chairlifts, varied terrain, and backcountry access, while enduring repeated ownership changes. Fires in 2009 and 2020 destroyed major facilities and equipment, yet rebuilding and repairs allowed operations to continue, reinforcing its long-standing reputation for resilience.
