Sassafras Point Light stood at the approaches to Providence Harbor in Rhode Island, marking a point where land projected into the Providence River and hindered navigation. First lit in 1872, it was a short wooden pyramidal lighthouse on a granite pier with a sixth-order Fresnel lens. It was closely tied to Fuller Rock Light, sharing authorization, design, and keepers. Because it was unmanned and accessible only by boat, keepers lived in town after plans for a dwelling never materialized. Low pay made the post difficult to fill, and the light was removed in 1912 when the channel was widened, leaving nothing behind.
