The first road to Southern California opened for wagons crossed here when Capt. Cooke passed in command of the Mormon Battalion in Nov. 1846. It later became the California Emigrant Road and, from 1858-1861, the route of the Butterfield Overland Mail from St. Louis to San Francisco, the longest land mail route ever attempted.
