Faywood Hot Springs in southwestern New Mexico has drawn people since the time of the Mimbres culture, as shown by nearby mortar holes, stone and flint tools, pottery, and copper spoons. Later visited by Apaches, other Native Americans, Spanish explorers, miners, and buffalo hunters, the springs entered recorded history under several names before becoming a resort in the late 19th century. Successive owners built hotels and bath houses, and by 1900 the modern name Faywood had emerged. Popular into the World War I era, the resort later declined, the hotel was demolished in 1952, and the property was eventually revived in 1993 as a private hot springs resort continuing a long bathing tradition.
