Sugarite Canyon State Park in northeastern New Mexico preserves both a rugged high-country landscape and the remains of an early-20th-century coal-mining town near the Colorado line northeast of Raton. Set where the Rocky Mountains meet the Great Plains, the park includes forested canyon slopes, basalt cliffs, mesas, streams, artificial lakes, meadows, and abundant wildlife. Sugarite Canyon served as Raton’s water supply by 1891, and coal mining began in 1894; the company town of Sugarite was established in 1912, peaked at nearly 1,000 residents, and declined rapidly after mine closures beginning in 1941. Established in 1985, the park now combines preserved ruins with recreation on lakes and trails.
