The first post office was established on May 18, 1889, as Alfred, O.T. The town's name was changed on June 6, 1890, to honor Zack Mulhall, a rancher and Wild West Show promoter. His daughter, Lucille Mulhall, was famous as the "World's First Cowgirl."
