Stamford Harbor Ledge Light stands on Chatham Rock off Stamford, Connecticut, in Long Island Sound about 3,600 feet from shore, marking the city’s approach from the water. Built in 1882 as a sparkplug-style cast-iron tower manufactured in Boston, it reflects a lighthouse form widely used on exposed ledges and shoals in the late 19th century. Over the years, keepers and their families lived across its seven levels, sustaining an isolated life tied to the harbor. Sold to a private party in 1955 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991, it later drew notice when offered for sale with surrounding underwater land.
