Gen. Zachary Taylor (1784–1850), a distinguished lifelong soldier and twelfth President of the United States, is buried here in his family cemetery. Commissioned Lt. in 1808, he served in the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War in 1832, and the Seminole War from 1836 to 1843. He became a Major Gen. in 1846, held Western Army Command in 1847, was elected President in 1848, and died in office.
