Lewis and Clark State Historic Site in Hartford, Illinois preserves the location of Camp River Dubois, where the Lewis and Clark Expedition was based from December 1803 to May 1804 before heading west. Opened in 2002 and operated by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Division of Historic Preservation, it stands near the Mississippi River on the dry side of the Chain of Rocks Levee. Designated National Trail Site #1 on the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, it features a 14,000-square-foot interpretive center, hands-on exhibits, a theater, a 55-foot full-scale cutaway keelboat, and an outdoor replica of the camp.
